Ysgol Afon Wen – Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

With the transformation of Hawthorn’s long-standing school into a new all-through “super school,” Ysgol Afon Wen marks a bold new chapter in education for the community. Tasked with creating a brand identity that captures the energy and optimism of this new beginning, we set out to design something bright, fun, and modern—while still paying deep respect to the legacy of the original Hawthorn School. A key part of this tribute is the inclusion of a hawthorn branch and flower within the identity—an elegant symbol of continuity and pride. The result is a brand that bridges generations: forward-looking and full of life, yet rooted in the stories and spirit of the past.

A Brand that Balances Legacy and Progress

The visual identity for Ysgol Afon Wen was designed to strike a careful balance between celebrating a rich heritage and ushering in a bold, modern future. At the heart of the brand is a symbol that is both meaningful and versatile.

The hawthorn branch and flower—a clear nod to the former Hawthorn School—serves as a respectful tribute to the history and emotional connection many in the community have with the site. It ensures that the legacy lives on, even as the school evolves into something new.

Supporting this is a clean, geometric hexagon, chosen not only for its visual simplicity and elegance, but also for what it represents. The six-sided shape suggests strength, unity, and versatility, while also symbolising the idea of standing out and being different—encouraging students to embrace individuality and innovation.

Inside the hexagon sit three dynamic stripes, representing the school’s core educational journey:
Activate, Advance, Achieve—the distinct stages of lower, middle, and upper school. These stripes embody growth and progression, creating a visual metaphor for how students move through their time at Ysgol Afon Wen, building confidence, skills, and aspirations along the way.

The overall identity is bright and future-focused, but grounded in familiarity. It’s a brand that feels fresh and exciting for students, while still earning the respect and recognition of past generations who hold Hawthorn close to heart.
